What you need to know about stomachaches

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • A stomachache could be a sign of numerous conditions. You should therefore carefully observe which part of the stomach is aching, as well as the severity of the pain.
  • There are a few types of stomachache that should not be ignored, such as a stomachache that lasts longer than six hours without respite, a stomachache alongside breathlessness or in combination with a fever, and stomachache with vomiting 3-4 times. Medical attention should be sought if you are experiencing any of these symptoms.

Stomachaches are frequent occurrences. However, have you ever wondered why we experience them, and what they could be telling us? Sometimes, stomachaches can be a signal from our bodies to let us know that we do, in fact, need to see a doctor.

Where is the stomachache and what could be causing it?

  1. Pain under the lowest rib on the right side: this is the position of the liver, gallbladder or spleen.
  2. Pain underneath the sternum or beneath the lowest rib (in the central section): this is where the stomach is located, as well as the pancreas, liver and lower sternum bone.
  3. Pain just above the hips on either the left or right side: this is where the kidneys, ureter and large intestines are located.
  4. Pain in the area around the navel: the small intestines are located here. If you experience pain on contact with this area, it may be caused by the “appendix”.
  5. Pain in the lower right-hand side of the stomach: the appendix, ureter and fallopian tubes are located here.
  6. Pain in the lower central area of the stomach: this is where the bladder and uterus can be found.
  7. Pain in the lower left-hand side of the stomach: the ureter and fallopian tubes are located here.

Which type of stomachache should necessitate a visit to a doctor?

  1. Pain that lasts for longer than six hours with no respite.
  2. Pain which prohibits eating.
  3. Stomachache in conjunction with vomiting more than 3-4 times.
  4. Stomach pain that increases with movement.
  5. Pain in the lower right-hand side of the stomach.
  6. Severe stomach pain that keeps from sleeping.
  7. Stomach pain alongside vaginal bleeding.
  8. Stomachache together with fever.
  9. Stomach pain in conjunction with breathlessness.
  10. Stomach pain alongside feeling faint, fainting and losing consciousness.
  11. Stomachache so severe that the pain spreads to the back.

As you can see, a stomachache is no small matter. Even if you may only be experiencing a little pain, please do not allow it to be overlooked. Always keep an eye on your body. If you encounter any of the aforementioned symptoms, please seek medical attention immediately.
