Hormonal Therapy

The administration of releasing hormones can be helpful in reducing the size of fibroids and, therefore, ease the patient's symptoms. However, these therapies can interfere with estrogen production and lead to unwanted side effects, such as hot flushes and vaginal dryness. Additionally, new fibroids may also develop once the treatment is stopped.

Targeted Therapy

The Thai medical industry now imports a special class of drugs from Europe that contains selective progesterone receptor modulators (SPRM) and is specifically indicated for the treatment of uterine fibroids. Basically, these drugs work by targeting the fibroid cells, making them effective in reducing their size. Symptomatic relief for the surgical approach and reduction in the size of fibroids can be done using targeted therapy or prescribed as a sole treatment. Within 5 to 10 days, these drugs can arrest irregular bleeding during menstrual cycles, reduce the size of fibroids, and relieve painful symptoms.

Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS)

In cases where fibroids are larger or symptoms are particularly severe, surgery may be considered the most effective treatment option. The standard procedure for such cases is a hysteroscopy, where a hysteroscope—a thin tube approximately two millimeters in diameter, equipped with a small camera and light—is inserted into the vagina to examine the cervix and the interior of the uterus. If larger fibroids or growths are detected, a larger diameter camera with an attached thin electric wire loop may be used. This wire loop allows the fibroid or polyp to be cut into small pieces using an electric current, which are then removed through the cervix without affecting surrounding tissues.
