Many parents struggle with the initial discovery that their child may have special needs. The reaction can be so strong that, unfortunately, in countries where it is permitted, some parents opt for an abortion rather than carry the pregnancy to term. This practice is illegal in Thailand and not accepted.
The important thing to remember is, while this news may initially seem bleak, it is far from hopeless. A child with special needs can go on to lead an emotionally fulfilling, productive life and form a profound bond with their parents. The best thing to do is learn as much as you can about your child’s specific special needs and how to address them.
Whether your child suffers from a chromosomal disorder such as Down Syndrome, common learning disabilities such as ADHD, or is on the autism spectrum, the best thing that you can do is to learn as much as possible and to mentally prepare yourself. Talk to specialist doctors and other parents who have been through similar situations. Reach out the local health system or school of your choice and find out what facilities or services are available.
Understand that there will be some difficult moments ahead and prepare yourself accordingly. It may be initially more challenging to bond with a child with Down syndrome or other conditions. It may be hard to adjust your expectations to what your child can realistically accomplish and at what rate.
Parents caring for children with special needs often find the experience emotionally draining. In some cases, they may put so much energy into looking out for their little one that they neglect their own mental wellbeing. Do not be like this. Just as you must secure your own oxygen mask in an airplane emergency before placing one on your child, you must look after your own needs before you can attend to someone else’s. Look for support groups through organizations such as BAMBI (http://www.bambiweb.org/en) or seek out the services of a counselor.
Although they may need some extra help along the way, many children with special needs go on to have very bright futures. Children with common conditions such as autism or Down Syndrome can often learn to compensate for their difficulties and to work around them. It will not always be an easy road, but it is important to remain hopeful and optimistic even when times are tough.
