Innovative AI Retinal Image Technology: Helping assess future health risks

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • AI Retinal Image technology can now help predict health risks, allowing for adjustment of health care practices before conditions develop. This is achieved by analyzing retinal images.
  • A general health check-up typically involves blood tests and an electrocardiogram (ECG) to reveal any currently hidden conditions and identify past and present health-related behaviors, although it may not indicate future health conditions.
  • The retina is an area where blood vessels can be seen non-invasively, and changes in these small vessels can indicate the beginning of health abnormalities in the body.

A general health check-up typically involves blood tests to measure various levels such as cholesterol and blood sugar. These tests can identify hidden conditions as well as reflect on past and present health management behaviors. Alternatively, an electrocardiogram (ECG) can reveal issues such as coronary artery problems, cardiomegaly or arrhythmia. However, these tests may not be capable of predicting future health issues. Vascular problems, including stroke and acute myocardial ischemia, are unpredictable acute conditions that significantly impact the body and life in general. Most cerebrovascular and cardiovascular conditions arise from hypertension, high cholesterol and vascular inflammation.

AI Retinal Image Technology: an initial health risk assessment

AI Retinal Image technology can now be used to analyze future health risks, allowing us to plan preventive care. This tool uses retinal imaging and analysis to interpret results.

The retina is an area where blood vessels are visible, including small blood vessels. The size of the retinal artery is 135.73 ± 15.64 μm, and the retinal vein is 151.32 ± 15.22 μm. Changes in these small blood vessels can provide an early indication that the body is experiencing abnormalities.

Additionally, fundoscopic examination of the optic nerve, which is part of the brain, can provide insights into conditions like glaucoma and predict the risk of dementia.

What is AI Retinal Image technology?

AI Retinal Image is a tool that can assess risk levels for 7 future health risks and 35 eye conditions by capturing retinal images to assess the quality of blood vessels and nerves within the eye using AI deep-learning technology.

How AI Retinal Image Works

AIRDOC involves capturing images of both retinas, with the device performing auto-calibration, auto-focus, and auto-capture, before securely uploading the images to the cloud for processing. It creates artificial neural networks and compares abnormalities using AI deep learning to report eye abnormalities and assess risk levels for 7 future health risks.

Risk Level Assessment for 7 Future Health Risks

  • Anemia
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Macular vision impairment
  • Cognitive impairment
  • Glucose metabolism impairment
  • Inhalation of particulate matter

Screening Results Definitions

  • Green score (low risk): You have a low risk of developing the condition in the future, but you should continue to take care of your health.
  • Yellow score (low to moderate risk): You have a low to moderate risk of developing the condition, but it is recommended that you adjust your lifestyle behaviors and get annual health check-ups to monitor your health.
  • Orange score (moderate to high risk): You have a moderate to high risk of developing the condition in the future, or you may already have the condition. Risk factors could be related to lifestyle or aging. It is recommended that you undergo additional health check-ups or confirmatory tests as advised by your doctor, and that you adjust your lifestyle behaviors.
  • Red score (high risk): You have a high risk of developing the condition in the future, or you may already have the condition. Risk factors could be related to lifestyle, aging or existing chronic diseases. It is recommended that you undergo additional health check-ups or confirmatory tests as advised by your doctor, and that you adjust your lifestyle behaviors.

Any risk level can be increased or reduced based on how well you follow through with lifestyle modifications and continuous health care.

Why are blood vessels in the eye screened?

Since the retina is an area where blood vessels are visible, and these retinal vessels are small, changes in these small blood vessels can provide an early indication that the body is experiencing abnormalities. For instance, acute high blood pressure can cause retinal blood vessels to leak and bleed. Therefore, retinal blood vessels are crucial for predicting future diseases such as atherosclerosis and the risk of diabetes. Additionally, the retina is an extension of the optic nerve, which is part of the brain. Fundoscopic examination can provide insights into conditions like glaucoma and predict the risk of dementia.

Efficiency and accuracy

AI Retinal Image has a high accuracy rate of up to 95% due to its use of AI for processing, which requires a large dataset to ensure its effectiveness. AI Retinal Image is used in leading hospitals in China and many countries worldwide, resulting in a dataset of up to 30 million images.

Procedure and preparations

  • Place your eyes on the machine and your forehead against the rest.
  • Follow the instructions provided by the machine, which presents a step-by-step guide.
  • During the imaging process, there will be one flash of light per eye, which is harmless.
  • The process is complete after images of both eyes are taken.

The test does not require dilating eye drops or the removal of contact lenses. The testing process takes only 1 minute, and results are available within 3 minutes.

Precautions for the test

  • For individuals who have had eye surgery or laser treatment, the machine may focus slowly or be unable to capture images.
  • For individuals with droopy eyelids, the machine may be unable to focus properly.
