Samitivej Receives ‘The Best of CEO People Leader’ Award
for Its Beyond textbook Approach to Human Resources and Sustainability

Chairat Panthuraamphorn, M.D., CEO of Samitivej and BNH Hospitals, received the ‘The Best of CEO People Leader’ award at the People Management Awards 2022, organized by the Personnel Management Association of Thailand (PMAT).

Chairat Panthuraamphorn, M.D., explained that “Human resource management is vital for a sustainable organization because people are upstream of an organization’s success. Smart and capable staff will be committed to quality, service and innovation midstream, which will guarantee an outstanding financial outcome downstream.”

Managing people by following theory is not effective because we still get headaches dealing with conflicts.  That’s why human resource management is about implementing non-traditional strategies, managing real-life situations and using unique approaches that fit with the organization.

Human resource management therefore becomes an issue of experience and learning lessons from a diverse workforce. When this diversity is explored and incorporated into the solution-finding process, the range of employee backgrounds can be a reliable key that the company can use to open a multitude of locks.

Chairat Panthuraamphorn, M.D., went on to say that “Human beings are not yet perfect. We still have needs, desires and passions.” He added that, “Managing people requires understanding their passions and aligning them with the goals of the organization.”

The world is constantly changing and textbooks can't be written as quickly as actual situations unfold, so our unique approach to management must be flexible if we are to ensure an effective response to current and future trends. The following are 3 key aspects that define our human resource operations:

  1. Recruit: Staff must have purpose of life and passion that align with the organization as this will result in a passion of work from the first day that they join the organization. We are proud to announce that Samitivej staff’s Passion Scores are as high as 89%.
  2. Retain: Seeing through people. Keeping hold of staff by playing to their unique strengths enables us to get the most out of them. Grade A and B staff are given the best rewards, while Grade D and E are rewarded less. As a result, we make employees appreciate the work they contribute and how they engage with the organization. We are pleased to have an Engagement Score of up to 88% at Samitivej, which exceeds the national average of 71%. Indeed, the winner of Thailand’s Best Employer award reported scores of around 85%, making our achievements all the more special.
  3. Develop: Development does not mean the same thing for each employee, which is why dynamism is required in response to the latest trends.

“We endeavor to identify employees capable of personal development, who are able to re-skill in response to patient needs. For those not ready to re-skill, up-skilling may be an option, such as through the services they can offer, to ensure we achieve the highest level of patient satisfaction. Having such employees has seen us reach an Emphatic Score of up to 99.8%,” explained Chairat Panthuraamphorn, M.D.

Chairat Panthuraamphorn, M.D. asked his staff to check themselves from time to time by standing in front of the mirror and asking oneself:
Is this a job for my future?
Does my job help me achieve my life’s purpose?
Does my job help bring success to my company?
Does my job offer satisfaction and success on a personal level?

Fixing problems in the past indicates that you are moving  backward.
Seeing current problems shows that you are starting to move.
Being able to see problems in the future indicates that you are starting to run.
To run—and run fast—we must be able to control problems to prevent them from occurring.
Do the “controllable” things first, then change things that are out of your control to be "controllable."
     Practice makes perfect.
If you don’t try, you can’t succeed.

Therefore, you must disrupt yourself before being disrupted in order to be in a changeable situation.

One piece of bread can lead all fish species, each with different habits, to travel in the desired direction. All that matters is in which direction the bread will be thrown.

In human resource management, we must always think about how it will benefit people.

Setting conditions, such as what you will get after doing something, will stimulate your desire.

But if you don't do it, there must be negative consequences which can instill fear.

Both of these are ways to lead people in the same direction.

What must we do to let people who work together have better and happier lives?

“Happy service providers mean happy patients, and when patients are happy success is sure to follow.”

We would like to thank everybody at PMAT for inviting us to the People Management Awards 2022. We have been thinking and doing things beyond the textbook for 8 years, always coming up with new ideas, while our objective has remained the same: to give a better quality of life to our patients, staff, doctors, partners and the entire community while building a healthcare ecosystem that achieves sustainability.
