Samitivej partners with Japan’s University of Occupational and Environmental Health to ensure access to outstanding occupational healthcare

Thursday, February 9, 2023 - Samitivej Hospitals has signed a Memorandum of Understanding ratifying its partnership with Japan’s University of Occupational and Environmental Health (based in Kitakyushu, with Tosiyaki Hikasi as its President). The partnership’s main objective is to exchange training, development, and knowledge between medical staff working in the field of occupational health. The signing ceremony was witnessed by a representative of the Japanese Embassy in Thailand.

Chairat Panthuraamphorn, M.D., CEO of Samitivej and BNH Hospitals, explained that the establishment of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) is expected to lead to industry consolidation and a greater elevation in economic prosperity on the eastern seaboard of Thailand. “There are many joint venture companies located near the hospital: 490 companies in Chonburi Province and 400 companies in Rayong Province. 180 companies have entered into official partnerships with Samitivej hospitals,” he explained.

This partnership will involve Samitivej sending doctors and nurses from its Occupation Medicine Center to Japan’s University of Occupational and Environmental Health for further training in the field of occupational medicine. The objectives are to extend the potential and capabilities of our Occupation Medicine Center in terms of care efficiency, treatment, and disease prevention, ensuring the utmost quality of life for those working in the industrial sector.

The Occupation Medicine Center at Samitivej Hospital offers a comprehensive range of occupational medicine services performed by a team of doctors board certified in occupational medicine, as well as doctors who have undergone Oil & Gas UK (OGUK) medical training. Key duties of the center’s medical team include performing medical assessments for pre-employment and annual check-ups for personnel, which require in-depth health analyses. Services also include doctors and their teams entering corporate establishments to perform risk assessments; tailored health screening for employees based on their specific career, work location, and environment, such as those exposed to loud noises, those subject to chemical exposure, or those working in confined spaces including tunnels, holes, and mines; medicals for oil rig employees; and medicals for seafarers. All of these services carry great importance as workers in these sectors will not have access to healthcare once on location, meaning both the employee and their employer must be confident that they are in good health. Additional services include the following: medicals for offshore employees in accordance with guidelines set forth by OGUK; medicals for oil rig employees working for PTTEP, for which doctors performing those medicals must be certified PTTEP Approved Doctors (PAD); screening for seafarers in accordance with guidelines from the Medical Department, Ministry of Public Health; and vaccinations and health screening services for seafarers about to travel overseas.

Should employees sustain an injury or illness while at work, the Occupation Medicine Center can provide treatment and risk assessment prior to their return to work, which is a necessary requirement that must be undertaken by medical professionals prior to any resumption of duties. If an employee is deemed unfit to return to work, consideration of their case will be performed by a health and safety team working alongside the company’s human resources department, who will advise suitable alternative duties. Doing so can assist employees by ensuring their continued remuneration, while considerations of compensation for their injuries can also be carried out.

Moreover, the center offers healthcare services for Japanese employees working in more than 400 companies throughout Chonburi and Rayong provinces.

Japan’s University of Occupational and Environmental Health was established in 1978 as a university specializing in occupational medicine. It is the only university of its kind in Japan to provide certifications in occupational medicine to doctors who undergo its thorough training program. The university’s objectives are to provide education and perform research into medical technologies that can be used in treatment, as well as to develop employee skills in the field of environmental health and their associated careers. Many of its alumni are now occupational health practitioners working in various large organizations. The university’s address is 1-1 Iseigaoka, Yahatanishi-ku, Kitakyushu-shi, Fukuoka, Japan.
