Sexual Performance Screening Program

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction is medically defined as the inability of the penis to achieve sufficient erection, to maintain the erection long enough during sexual intercourse, or to complete sexual intercourse.Although this condition is not life-threatening, it can be a warning sign of overall physical health issues, particularly diseases caused by abnormalities in the circulatory and vascular systems, such as stroke and ischemic heart disease, which are all related to inadequate blood supply to the organs.

In addition, erectile dysfunction can also affect relationships with a spouse and may lead to family issues.

Sexual Performance Screening Program includes the following tests:
  • PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen): A blood test to measure the amount of PSA protein (which is produced by the prostate gland and helps liquefy semen) in the blood
  • Testosterone: A test to measure the level of the male sex hormone in the blood
What does the examination involve?
This examination involves a physical check-up by a urologist, along with a blood test to measure PSA protein levels and testosterone levels.
For this blood test, there is no need to fast or refrain from drinking water beforehand.

Treatment methodsErectile dysfunction in men can be treated with psychological support, lifestyle modifications, medication, surgery, or medical devices. The choice of treatment depends on the cause, severity, and any underlying conditions. A doctor will determine the most suitable treatment for each patient as follows:
  • Medication: Oral medication is used to dilate blood vessels in the penis, but it must be prescribed by a doctor. Self-medication is strongly discouraged, especially for patients with underlying conditions and the elderly, as erectile dysfunction drugs that dilate blood vessels can have life-threatening side effects. If erectile dysfunction is caused by abnormally low testosterone levels, the doctor may treat it with synthetic hormone injections to restore normal levels.
  • Surgery: Penile prosthesis implantation is typically recommended only when other treatments are ineffective, as it may cause side effects. The procedure must be performed only by a urological surgeon with specialized expertise.
  • Shockwave therapy*: This is the latest technology for treating erectile dysfunction. It uses low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy applied externally to the penis. The therapy stimulates the formation of new capillaries, increasing blood circulation and enhancing erectile function. It is also considered very safe and has no drug-related side effects.

*Shockwave therapy should be performed only by a specialist. Proper diagnosis of the underlying cause is essential to evaluate and select the most appropriate treatment for the patient, ensuring the best possible outcome.
