Old but not obsolete

Old but not obsolete

Exercise is essential for people of all ages. Older people who have trouble moving their body need to exercise, as it helps improve their movement. Exercise should focus on joint movement, muscle strength and balance training. Although people may be old, it does not mean that they are obsolete.

Exercises that suit older adults include:

  • Brisk walking or walking and arm-swinging
  • Physical movement exercises
  • Water-based exercises, including swimming, walking in water or physical exercise in water
  • Chinese boxing, tai chi or social dancing
  • Riding exercise bikes
  • Light weight-lifting for limb muscle strength
  • Back exercises
  • Squeezing a rubber ball for grip strength
  • Yoga or muscle stretches
