Allergic rhinitis

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The allergic rhinitis is most commonly found among all allergies.

Several people may be bored when they are awakened with tissue papers, cough, sneezing or snuffling regularly. These symptoms indicate that you may suffer from the allergic rhinitis or generally called “air allergy”.

The allergic rhinitis is most commonly found among all allergies. It is the abnormality due to the sensitivity of the nose membrane against the stimulant or allergen i.e. dust, cockroach, dandruff of cat or dog, pollen, fungus etc. Upon contact with such stimulant, it causes itching, cough, sneezing or snuffling.

The allergic rhinitis may not severe, but affects against the life quality and causes annoyance against this patient because he always sneezes or snuffles, and without accurate treatment, other sickness or complications may be caused i.e. conjunctivitis from allergy, asthma, inflamed skin from allergy, sinusitis, snoring and enlarged adenoid gland to block the respiratory system, inflamed tympanum, rhinitis etc.

The medical treatment must begin from the detection of the allergy cause by mean of the diagnosis by the doctor, record checking and physical examination jointly with the laboratory test in 2 methods as follows:

  1. Skin prick test by dropping the anti-allergen solution and solution comparing the advantages and disadvantages on the skin, forearm or back and do the skin pricking with the specific device. Read the test value at 15 minutes. By this method, the patient should stop using the anti-allergy or anti-histamine medicine at least 1 week before test.
  2. Doing test of the specific allergen in blood (Specific IgE). Doing test of IgE specific to each type of allergen in the patient’s blood. As the advantage of this test, the patient must not stop using the anti-allergy or anti-histamine medicine before the blood test.

Medical treatment

  1. The patient should avoid the allergens and irritants. This method affects much positively against the patient because when the patient knows his cause of allergy and tries to reduce the quantity or not to be under the environment causing the allergy, the rhinitis is lessened. However, in facts, it may be difficult to be done. Therefore, the treatment method must be used together with the medicine use.
  2. Using the oral anti-histamine, anti-leukotriene, nose spraying with steroid medicine group.
  3. Giving the anti-allergy vaccination in 2 methods: Subcutaneous injection and sublingual.
  4. Other additional treatments i.e. nose cleaning

Because the rhinitis from allergy is chronic and affects against the life quality on study, working and society, the treatment should be under the regular care to follow up the complications and correct medicine use. The anti-allergy vaccination could change the action, reduce the medicine use or remove the symptoms, depending on the symptoms of each patient and the doctor’s opinions. This treatment should be under care the expertise doctor for the allergy. As important, the patient should do physical exercise for good health.
