โรคพิษสุนัขบ้าหรือโรคกลัวน้ำ เกิดจากเชื้อไวรัสชื่อ Rabies virus ซึ่งเป็นRNA virusสายเดี่ยว จัดอยู่ในจำพวก Rhabdovirus  เป็นได้ในสัตว์เลี้ยงลูกด้วยนม ที่เป็นปัญหาในประเทศไทยมากที่สุดคือสุนัข ทั้งสุนัขจรจัดและสุนัขเลี้ยง แต่ในสัตว์อื่นก็สามารถเป็นได้เช่น แมว หนู ค้างคาว ลิง กระรอกหรือสัตว์ป่าอื่นๆ
             Rabies is a viral disease that causes acute encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) in warm-blooded animals. It is transmitted by both wild and domestic animals, most commonly by a bite or any scratch from an infected animal but occasionally by other forms of contact. Dogs are major cause of this disease in Thailand and there are possibilities that other animals such as cats, rats, bats, monkeys, and wild animals will be carriers.
