ที่กล่าวในที่นี้หมายถึง ภาวะที่ข้อเกิดความผิดปรกติจากสภาวะเสื่อมถอยของร่างกายซึ่งหากสัมพันธ์โดยตรงกับอายุที่เพิ่มขึ้น จะเรียกว่าเสื่อมชนิดปฐมภูมิ (Primary OA knee)หากความผิดปรกติเกิดจากมีปัญหาในเข่ามาก่อน อาทิเช่น กระดูกหัก,ติดเชื้อในข้อ ก็จะเรียกว่า ข้อเสื่อมทุติยภูมิ (Seconndary OA knee)
